Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro Crater can change the way you look at the natural world.

As a safari destination it seems fictional. Some 30,000 wild mammals occupy an extinct volcanic caldera in northern Tanzania. And they represent almost all the most iconic African animals.

From the very first moment you can see that this is not purely a wildlife refuge. No, Ngorongoro Crater feels like a utopia where humans can never be more than visitors. Perhaps nowhere in Africa is as magical.

Ngorongoro Crater is so important. It then provides some very practical tips for planning a safari in Ngorongoro. There is nothing definitive about a wildlife realm as pure as Ngorongoro. Instead, you simply need to be in the right place at the right time to maximise the safari experience.

Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park

The closest national park to Arusha town – northern Tanzania’s safari capital – Arusha National Park is a multi-faceted jewel, often overlooked by safarigoers, despite offering the opportunity to explore a beguiling diversity of habitats within a few hours.
The entrance gate leads into shadowy montane forest inhabited by inquisitive blue monkeys and colourful turacos and trogons – the only place on the northern safari circuit where the acrobatic black-and-white colobus monkey is easily seen. In the midst of the forest stands the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater, whose steep, rocky cliffs enclose a wide marshy floor dotted with herds of buffalo and warthog.
Further north, rolling grassy hills enclose the tranquil beauty of the Momela Lakes, each one a different hue of green or blue. Their shallows sometimes tinged pink with thousands of flamingos, the lakes support a rich selection of resident and migrant waterfowl, and shaggy waterbucks display their large lyre-shaped horns on the watery fringes. Giraffes glide across the grassy hills, between grazing zebra herds, while pairs of wide-eyed dik-dik dart into scrubby bush like overgrown hares on spindly legs.
Although elephants are uncommon in Arusha National Park, and lions absent altogether, leopards and spotted hyenas may be seen slinking around in the early morning and late afternoon. It is also at dusk and dawn that the veil of cloud on the eastern horizon is most likely to clear, revealing the majestic snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro, only 50km (30 miles) distant.
But it is Kilimanjaro’s unassuming cousin, Mount Meru – the fifth highest in Africa at 4,566 metres (14,990 feet) – that dominates the park’s horizon. Its peaks and eastern footslopes protected within the national park, Meru offers unparalleled views of its famous neighbour, while also forming a rewarding hiking destination in its own right.
Passing first through wooded savannah where buffalos and giraffes are frequently encountered, the ascent of Meru leads into forests aflame with red-hot pokers and dripping with Spanish moss, before reaching high open heath spiked with giant lobelias. Everlasting flowers cling to the alpine desert, as delicately-hoofed klipspringers mark the hike’s progress. Astride the craggy summit, Kilimanjaro stands unveiled, blushing in the sunrise.

4 Day Mt Meru Trekking Tour

Mount Meru

4 Day Mt Meru Trekking Tour

At a height of 4,566 m, Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania and the fifth highest on the African Continent. Its distinct appearance was formed around 250 000 years ago by a tremendous volcanic eruption that destroyed the entire eastern flank, leaving a horseshoe-shaped crater. Not only does Mt Meru boast impressive views and diverse vegetation, it also gives you the chance to see some wildlife in the form of a walking safari. On your trek you might come across large game such as giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, elephants, antelopes and colobus monkeys. As the vegetation changes from dense mountain rainforest into heather and moorland and finally alpine desert, the frequency of animals you will see becomes scarcer, shifting your focus from animals to landscape. You will be accompanied by an armed park ranger on your tour.

Day 1 Arusha – Momella Gate (1,500 m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m)

In the morning you will be met at your hotel and after a briefing about your upcoming trek start the scenic drive to Arusha National Park. Arriving at the gate, your guide will complete the registration forms and gather the hiking team before you will start your journey up Mount Meru accompanied by an armed park ranger. Walking through the grasslands towards the acacia forest on the southern route, you might spot giraffes and buffaloes lazily grazing on the lush vegetation. After roughly 2 hours you will reach the Maio Falls, where you can stretch your legs and enjoy a picnic lunch. Thereafter the journey continues through the “fig tree arch”, an unusual tree formation created by the wild fig Ficus Thonningii. Another two hours of hiking takes you to Miriakamba Hut where afternoon tea and snacks await you. The night will be spent at the Miriakamba Hut.
Lunch; Dinner

Day 2 Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m) – Saddle Hut (3,550 m)

After breakfast you will continue on wooden steps along a steep track. The shift in altitude brings about a noticeable drop in temperature and walking may seem easier. The low hanging clouds often shrouds the rainforest in mist, creating a moody atmosphere in the lush vegetation. Your uphill trek will take you to “Mgongo wa Tembo” (elephant back) at a height of 3,200 m after approximately 2 hours, where you can take in the scenery and rest, before heading onward to Saddle Hut (3,550 m). On the way you will see the vegetation changing from rainforest to heather and moorland. After reaching Saddle Hut you can opt to hike to Little Meru (3,820 m), a 1 to 1½ hours hike from where you will have a fantastic view over Arusha National Park and Kilimanjaro about 80 km away. A warm meal and an early night awaits you back at Saddle Hut as your wake-up call will be just after midnight.
Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 3 Saddle Hut (3,550 m) – Socialist Peak (4,562 m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m)

You will be awakened with a small snack and warm tea, after which you will start your final ascent. Headlamps light your way as you follow the trail through bush land to Rhino Point (3,821 m). The path becomes more challenging and occasionally climbing will be required. Following the crater rim, you will walk on frozen volcanic ash and rocks, before reaching the summit, Socialist Peak, in about 4 – 5 hours. Standing at the peak you will enjoy the breath-taking view of the sun rising above Mt Kilimanjaro as well as have a fantastic view of Mt Meru’s crater with its steep sides and the “ash cone” in the middle. After taking a few deep fresh breaths you will start your descent on the same route back to Saddle Hut (3,550 m) where you can recuperate with hot soup and tea. Once rested, you will continue the descent to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m). Tired and happy you will have your evening meal and doze off with the views of the day filling your thoughts.
Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 4 Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m) – Momella Gate (1,500 m)

After breakfast you will start your final stretch on the so-called “northern route back to Momella gate. On this 2 to 3 hour trek you will once again have the chance to see giraffes, buffaloes elephants as well as the black and white colobus monkeys. Arriving at the gate you will say farewell to your hiking crew and be taken back to Arusha.
Breakfast
Note: The summit stage contains a few easy but unsecured climbing passages. A good head for heights and surefootedness are absolutely necessary. In adverse weather conditions (heavy rain, icy rocks or thick fog) the park ranger can call off the summit attempt. We do not advise to climb Mt Meru in the rainy season in April and May.

3 Days Private Safari in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

3 Days Private Safari in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
We do it with #Kilimanjaro #Joy Tours #Discover #Maasai Mara National Reserve, the most famous and most visited reserve in Kenya where all large African animals are present. In the Maa language, Mara means "spotted" and may refer to the colorful landscapes. Alternatively, the name may refer to the arrival of over two million herbivores during the annual migration (wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras). So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bag and be ready for your amazing journey in Maasai Mara!

Explorers Wild Adventures Safari in Kenya Itinerary

DAY 1: NAIROBI - MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE

You will be picked up from your hotel in Nairobi on the agreed time upon confirmation of your tour. Then, you will depart to Maasai Mara National Reserve at 08:00 via the viewpoint of the western Great Rift Valley and Narok Town for lunch. Your journey will deepen into the Maasai plains, arriving at around 14:00 for check in to your tented camp.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is widely considered to be one of the world’s greatest safari destinations featuring traditional Maasai Village, breathtaking scenery, and an incredible abundance of both resident and migratory wildlife. Your afternoon drive will begin late in the day and conclude just before darkness falls.
This is the best time of the day for nocturnal hunters who prepare for their nightly expeditions. Watering holes are also usually busy just before sunset as animals such as hippos return to their resting spots while others congregate to drink before retiring for the night.

DAY 2: MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE (FULL DAY)

Your day starts with the breakfast at the camp and by 08:00, you'll leave with picnic lunch for a full day game drive. The Maasai Mara landscape is scenic savannah grassland on rolling hills. The reserve is the best park for game viewing in Kenya as it has an extensive road and track network which allows for close range viewing and photography.
Famous for its rich wildlife, the Maasai Mara is home to not only the Big Five (elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino, and leopard) but also many birds (over 500 species of birds have been recorded). A game drive to Mara River which is the point to spot the crocodiles and hippopotamus is always emphasized by the guides.
The mighty river is inhabited by crocodiles lying in wait for the wildebeest to cross during their spectacular annual mass migration from the Serengeti in the South to the Maasai Mara in the North. You will take a break for your picnic lunch after viewing the hippos and crocodile. Your game drive will continue till late in the evening. You will also have the option of visiting a local Maasai Village.

DAY 3: MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE - NAIROBI

There will be an early morning pre-breakfast game drive and perhaps you will catch a glimpse of the big cats as they hunt and kill very early in the morning. You'll have a great chance to view lions, cheetahs, and leopards at this time of the morning. If you are lucky you will witness a hunt and a kill.
At 09:30, back to the camp for full breakfast. Later, you will depart the Maasai Mara for Nairobi with a stopover at the curio store where you can buy some souvenirs to remind you of a great holiday in the Mara. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain known to man. It was formed some 2.5 million years ago from a volcanic mountain sinking due to inactivity, and was initially thought to be higher than Tanzania’s famous Kilimanjaro.
The crater has evolved into a unique and integral part of Tanzania’s eco-system. The crater is actually a caldera, measures 22.5 km’s across and the rim walls stand 600m high.
Views from within and from the rim are breathtaking (as can be seen from the picture). The crater houses 30,000 animals and a large variety of birds, which rarely move from the area due to the availability of water through wet and dry seasons

Two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere Reserves have been established within this area. Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Serena Lodge.
Day 6: Tanzania Adventure Safari after breakfast, transfer to Seronera airstrip for the flight back to Arusha Airport for your onward travel plans.
